Privacy policy
Effective date: October 8, 2026
This policy covers the utranscribe Chrome extension and this support website.
Information the extension handles
utranscribe reads the current YouTube video’s title, URL, caption metadata and available transcript to display, search, copy, export and prepare the text for an AI summary. It detects video changes while the extension panel is open. It does not maintain a browsing history database.
The extension has no developer-operated backend, analytics or advertising trackers. It does not send transcripts to the developer. It does not collect passwords, API keys, payment details, cookies or microphone recordings.
Local and session storage
Your AI provider and timestamp preferences stay in local extension storage. The most recent transcript and temporary pending AI insertion jobs are held in Chrome’s extension session storage. Pending insertion expires after ten minutes; its stored prompt is removed after a result, tab closure or a later check of an expired job. Session storage clears when the browser session ends.
Clear session data removes the stored transcript and pending prompts and cancels waiting insertions. Uninstalling the extension removes its extension storage. Downloaded files and clipboard copies remain outside extension storage until you remove or replace them.
Clipboard and downloads
Copy transcript writes the transcript to your clipboard. Summarize also attempts to copy the full summary prompt as a fallback. These actions replace your clipboard contents; the extension does not read the clipboard. Your operating system or clipboard software may retain copied text. TXT files are saved to your chosen download location.
When you choose an AI provider
Clicking Summarize opens ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini and places the video title, source URL, transcript and summary instructions into its editor. The extension requests access only to your selected AI website for this feature. It does not overwrite an existing draft or press Send.
The provider can process draft text before you send it. Its own terms, account requirements, retention practices and privacy policy apply. Ordinary requests to YouTube and AI websites also expose connection information to those services. No transcript text is placed in the AI website URL, and the extension makes no direct AI API requests.
Permissions
- YouTube access: read supported video pages and available captions.
- Optional AI website access: find the selected provider’s editor and insert the requested prompt.
- Scripting: run code bundled with the extension to read transcripts and fill the editor.
- Side panel: display the transcript and its controls beside the video.
- Storage: retain preferences and temporary session data.
- Clipboard write: copy text after your action.
Use and sharing
Data is used only for the extension’s transcript and AI handoff features. We do not sell user data, use it for advertising, or use it to determine creditworthiness or for lending. Transfer to your selected AI website occurs when you request that feature.
